Pope Receives Logo for World Youth Day 2005

VATICAN CITY, OCT. 31, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II received the official logo of World Youth Day 2005, an event that is expected to gather 800,000 young people.

The logo for the event, which will take place in Cologne in August 2005, was given to the Pope on Wednesday by Monsignor Heiner Koch, secretary-general of WYD, and Hermann Josef Johanns, director of the WYD Office.

Jörg Zimmermann, the logo's young German designer, has produced a dynamic design with clear elements, which reflects the message that all Christians are called to turn to the cross, to look at Christ, crucified and risen, and to worship him, mirroring the theme of the 20th World Youth Day: «We Have Come to Worship Him» (Matthew 2:2).

The design, approved by the Pontifical Council for the Laity, was made known to the public last June. «John Paul II was impressed by the WYD logo,» Johanns said, following Wednesday's general audience.

Representatives of the WYD Office arrived in Rome on Tuesday to discuss the planning of the event with the Pontifical Council for the Laity.
