500 000 på utendørsmesse i Fátima

Nesten en halv million troende deltok da pave Benedikt XVI feiret utendørsmesse i Fátima onsdag.

I sin preken sa paven at han kommer som en pilegrim til Portugal, og at Fátima er stedet som Jomfru Maria valgte å tale til menneskeheten i den moderne tidsalder:

"At a time when the human family was ready to sacrifice all that was most sacred on the altar of the petty and selfish interests of nations, races, ideologies, groups and individuals, our Blessed Mother came from heaven, offering to implant in the hearts of all those who trust in her the Love of God burning in her own heart. At that time it was only to three children, yet the example of their lives spread and multiplied, especially as a result of the travels of the Pilgrim Virgin, in countless groups throughout the world dedicated to the cause of fraternal solidarity. May the seven years which separate us from the centenary of the apparitions hasten the fulfilment of the prophecy of the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to the glory of the Most Holy Trinity."

Onsdag etter ankomst til Fátima overga Den hellige far - på tampen av presteåret - presteskapet til Jomfru Marias rene hjerte, i en seremoni ved Fátimas berømte Mariahelligdom.

Møtte kunstnere

Benedikt har også møtt representanter fra veldedighetsorganisasjoner og et utvalg av Portugals kunstnere, forfattere og musikere. Under møtet med kulturpersonlighetene kommenterte han blant annet Det annet vatikankonsil:

"The church, on the basis of a renewed awareness of the Catholic tradition, took seriously and discerned, transformed and overcame the fundamental critiques that gave rise to the modern world, the Reformation and the Enlightenment. In this way the church herself accepted and refashioned the best of the requirements of modernity by transcending them on the one hand, and on the other by avoiding their errors and dead ends."

Paven avsluttet i formiddag sitt besøk i Portugal med messefeiring i Porto - landets nest største by - hvor rundt 200 000 troende var tilstede i regnværet.

Pater Federico Lombardi, Vatikanets pressetalsmann, sier at han er gledelig overrasket over de store folkemengdene som har deltatt på arrangementene, og tolker dette som en støtteerklæring til pave Benedikt XVI.

Det hektiske reiseprogrammet fortsetter den 4-5. juni da paven reiser til Kypros. Her vil Den hellige far blant annet overrekke arbeidsdokumentet - Instrumentum laboris - til biskoper fra Midt-Østen i forbindelse med bispesynoden som finner sted den 10-24. oktober i Vatikanet.
