Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of Granada en Colombia, 1999
The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II has elevated (October 29th 1999) the Vicariate Apostolic of Ariari (Colombia) to the rank of Diocese, with the new name of Granada en Colombia, maintaining the same territory and making it suffragan of the metropolitan Church of Bogota.
The new diocese of Granada en Colombia has the same territory and borders as the Vicariate of Ariari. Since the town of Granada was the see of the former Vicariate, the new diocese takes the name of the town. Patroness of the diocese will be Mary Auxiliatrix and the church dedicated to Our Lady of Carmel will be the cathedral.
