Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of Mocoa-Sibundoy, 1999
The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II has elevated (October 29th 1999) the Vicariate Apostolic of Sibundoy to the rank of diocese with the name Mocoa-Sibundoy, maintaining the same territorial area, making it suffragan of the metropolitan Church of Popayan.
The new diocese of Mocoa-Sibundoy , with the same territory and borders as the former Vicariate of Sibundoy, has taken its new name adding that of Mocoa, the main city of this civil department which has recently grown in population and importance. The main church, dedicated to St Alphonse Marie de Ligori, will be the cathedral, and St Michael Archangel church will be pro-cathedral.
