Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of Tumaco, 1999
The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II has elevated (October 29th 1999) the Vicariate Apostolic of Tumaco to the rank of diocese with the same name and territorial area, making it suffragan of the metropolitan Church of Popayan.
The territory of the new diocese of Tumaco remains that of the former Vicariate, except for the district of Iscuande which passes under the jurisdiction of the neighbouring prefecture apostolic of Guapi. The diocese takes as patroness St Teresa of the Child Jesus, whereas the Church dedicated to St Andrew Apostle will become the cathedral.
