Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of Luni ca 465

Luni probably had a bishop from the IV Century. The first known bishop of Luni is Felice (mentioned 465). In 1204, as the city of Luni was uninhabited by that time, the see was moved to Sarzana. This move was definitely aproved by Pope Paul II, who renamed the diocese Luni and Sarzana in 1465. In 1797 Pope Pius VI erected the diocese of Pontremoli, taking territory from Luni and Sarzana. In 1820, the diocese of Brugnato (erected 1133) was added to Luni and Sarzana.

The name Luni gradually disappeared. In 1929, the See was moved to La Spezia, and the diocese was given the alternate names «Luni» or «La Spezia, Sarzana e Brugnato». But in 1975, the name Luni was abandoned.
