Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the changes in Sicily, 2 December 2000

On 2.December 2000, it was made known that the Holy Father had reorganized the Ecclesial Provinces of Sicily. He

  1. erected the Province of Catania, elevating the Archdiocese of Catania (previously immediately subject to the Apostolic See) to Metropolitan, giving it as suffragan see the Dioceses of Acireale (previously immediately subject to the Apostolic See) and Caltagirone (previously suffragan of Siracusa);
  2. erected the Province of Agrigento, elevating the Diocese of Agrigento (previously suffragan of Monreale) to Metropolitan, giving it as suffragan sees the Dioceses of Caltanissetta (previously suffragan of Monreale) and Piazza Armerina (previously suffragan of Siracusa);
  3. transferred Monreale (previously a Metropolitan See) to the Province of Palermo, in which it is now a suffragan Archdiocese.
