Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Beginnings of the Diocese of Panamá
There is an uncertainty about the beginnings of the Diocese of Panama. The Catholic Encyclopedia (1911) says: The Diocese of Panama (Panamanensis) was erected by Leo X in 1520 (Annuaire Pont.) or in 1515, or by Clement VII, in 1534 (Moroni, "Diz. di Erud. However, it seems that it started out as the Diocese of Santa María la Antigua del Darién, and was later moved to Panamá.
