Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of San Lorenzo

On 18 May 2000, it was made public that Pope John Paul II had erected the Diocese of San Lorenzo (Paraguay), detaching it from the Archdiocese of Asunción and making it a suffragan of that same Metropolitan See.

The new Diocese of San Lorenzo (latin name: Sancti Laurentii) comprises the territory of 12 of the 19 Districts of the "Departamento Central". The area of the new Diocese is 1.924 kmq and the population 784.390 inhabitants. The number of parishes is 13, churches and chapels 329; there are 19 priests, 12 permanent deacons, 7 major seminarians; 3 religious institutes, 1 one male secular institute, and 10 female.
