Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of Dongola 1330 - ca 1350

The diocese of Dongola was established in 1330 and covered the African kingdom of the same name, was the result of Dominican missionary activity which started in 1317. The diocese seems to have lasted some 20 years and had apparently only one bishop, Bartolomeo de Tivoli.

In the course of the 6th century three Christian kingdoms were established in Sudan:

  • Nobatia, converted to Monophysisism ca 543
  • Maqurra, converted to Orthodoxy ca 550.
  • Alodia, later called Aloa, converted to monophysisism ca 570.

In the 7th century, Nobatia and Maqurra united to become Dongola. Dongola was conquered by Islamic tribes sometime in the 14th century, while Aloa survived as Christian state until 1504.

See a map of Dongola.
