Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the diocese of Walla Walla 1846-1850

The diocese of Walla Walla (in the present state of Washington) was erected in 1846. The bishop was not permitted to travel there, and was resident in The Dalles.

According to the NCE, v. 13, p. 612c, Walla Walla was abandoned by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate as an after effect of the massacre of Dr. M. Whitman and family by the Cayuse Indians in 1847. This would explain why the only bishop was not permitted to travel there. The diocese was suppressed in 1850.
