Nordiska Biskopskonferensen

With deep sorrow, have we, the Roman Catholic bishops in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, received the news of yet another destruction of a church in the Middle East, this time in Alexandria. Numerous Coptic Christians were murdered. Only a very short time after the massacre in the Syrian-Catholic cathedral in Baghdad, we learn that new acts of terror are directed against the vulnerable Christian minority in this part of the world.

We, therefore, strongly appeal to the authorities in these countries forcefully and wholeheartedly to protect the Christians and their holy sites. Also, we encourage the governments of our Nordic countries to defend the right to religious freedom and intervene for the protection all religious minorities in the Middle East and elsewhere.

We are pleased to notice that Pope Benedict will invite leaders of all faiths to Assisi this autumn. His intention is to enhance the co-operation and dialogue between religious leaders and to promote peace and justice. Together with the faithful of all persuasions, we will oppose violence and force in the name of religion , whoever the victims happen to be .

It has long been a priority of this Bishops' Conference to assemble in Jerusalem in February this year. Our intention is, within the gates of the Holy City, to make our involvement in these matters evident and to pray for justice and peace.
