Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Apostolic Prefecture of Newfoundland

According to the NCE, Catholisism was introduced on Newfoundland by Franciscan missionaries sent by the Bishop of Quebec. However, since the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the island had been a British possession, and was therefore under the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Vicariate of London. As a result of this, we conclude the Apostolic Prefecture of Newfoundland, establised in 1784, must be considered as de facto established from Quebec, but de iure establised from London.
