Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on the Diocese of Martirano (Martoranum) 1099

Martirano was probably erected as diocese in the XI century when the Normans defeated Saracens and reorganized Calabria with 6 new counties, one of which was Martirano. Some say it could be older (VIII - X century) but there are no documents to support that. In 1099 we find a bishop of Martirano at the 1st crusade. The diocese was suppressed on 27 June 1818 by the bull «De utiliori» of Pius VII, and incorporated in Nicastro.
