Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Notes on Trinidad 1516 - 1650

According to "History of the Catholic Church in Jamaica" by Francis J. Osborne, S.J., 1988, Chicago, Loyola University Press, Jamaica was erected into an abbacy in 1516, ex nihil. However, this abbacy should more properly have been called a prelature, since its incumbents were not monks, but came from both the secular clergy and mendicant orders. The last abbot died in 1650.
