Vatican Art Masterpieces Headed to World Youth Day

TORONTO, DEC. 14, 2001 ( An exhibition on "Images of Salvation: Masterpieces from the Vatican and Other Italian Collections" will be shown this summer in Toronto for World Youth Day, the Royal Ontario Museum announced.

The exhibition will include more than 140 universal art treasures, such as a 17th-century Bernini silver-and-bronze reliquary, exhibited for the first time outside of Italy, the Vatican Library's Giovanni Morello said during a press conference this week.

The exhibition, which will open June 8 and close Aug. 11, will also display 12th- and 13th-century religious manuscripts of the Bible.

The World Youth Day, set for July 22-28, is expected to attract 750,000 people.

The young pilgrims will benefit from a $6 reduction in the museum's entrance fee. Ordinarily, the fee is $9.50, the museum's vice president, Joel Peters, said.
