Den katolske kirke reagerer på utnevnelsen av praktiserende homoseksuell til biskop i den episkopale kirke

Washington (KI/CWNews.com) - I en mildt formulert offentlig stillingtagen har en talsmann for den amerikanske katolske bispekonferanse uttrykt at utnevnelsen av en praktiserende homoseksuell til biskop i den episkopale kirke innebærer "nye økumeniske utfordringer."

Biskop Stephen E. Blaire av Stockton i California, leder for den katolske bispekonferanses komite for økumeniske anliggender, sa at den episkopale kirkes beslutning innebar "et farvel til den alminnelige forståelse av den menneskelige seksualitets mening og formål, og om homoseksuelle handlinger vurdert moralsk ut fra Den hellige Skrift og den kristne tradisjon". Utnevnelsen hadde, sa han videre, "alvorlige konsekvenser" for den pågående økumeniske dialog mellom katolikker og anglikanere. Den anglikanske kirke kalles i USA for "episcopalian".

Den katolske kirke ville ikke desto mindre, sa biskop Blair, fortsatt være innstilt på en dialog med episkopale kirkeledere, selv om den nå er vanskeliggjort. Biskopens uttalelse nevnte også at den anglikansk-katolske dialog hadde vært "seriøs og fruktbar" i de senere år.

Den episkopale kirke hadde akkurat utnevnt V. Gene Robinson, som lever i et homoseksuelt forhold, til ny biskop av New Hampshire. Bispevielsen og innsettelsen skal skje utpå høsten.

The Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches, both nationally and internationally, have held serious and fruitful dialogues for the fostering of Christian unity for almost forty years.

In the light of the recent decisions made at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in the United States concerning the appointment of a bishop who professes himself to be in an active homosexual relationship, and the recognition that some local Episcopal communities bless same-sex unions, new ecumenical challenges have been created.

These decisions reflect a departure from the common understanding of the meaning and purpose of human sexuality, and the morality of homosexual activity as found in Sacred Scripture and the Christian tradition. As such they have serious implications in the search for Christian unity and for the work of our bilateral Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue in the United States.

In these times of new ecumenical challenges, we remain committed to prayerful and honest dialogue, however difficult, in responding to Christ's prayer for the unity of the Church. We continue to pray for the bishops, clergy and laity of the Episcopal Church in the United States, and for all our brothers and sisters baptized into the body of Christ.
