Chronology of Catholic Dioceses:Andorra

See a list of abbreviations used in this list. See also our listing of current ecclesial jurisdictions.

Although there is both an ancient Cathedral and a Bishop's Residence in Andorra, there has never been a Diocesan See in the Republic. Andorra has, since the Church was organized in these areas, always belonged ecclesially to the Diocese of Urgell (Urgel) in Spain. This diocese was erected before 527, maybe even as early as the 4th century. The Bishops of Urgell have also exercised secular jurisdiction over Andorra, together with the counts of Foix (France). The Bishop of Urgell and the President of the Republic of France are nominally 'co-princes' of Andorra - "principes soberanos" - , though this title is now only honorific.
